What is Sleep Apnoea?

Self-Assessment and Diagnosis

It is important to distinguish between:

a. People who just snore

b. People who snore and also have sleep apnoea.

Self Assessment Questionnaire for Sleep Apnoea
  1. Do you snore loudly?
  2. Is your snoring a problem for others?
  3. Do you lack vitality on waking?
  4. Are you often sleepy during the day?
e.g. do you fall asleep at meetings, reading or watching TV?
  5. Has anyone heard you snort, gasp, or hold your breath during sleep?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions you may be suffering from more than just snoring, you may have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

Over 60% of people who regularly snore have some degree of sleep apnoea. The vast majority of people who have sleep apnoea are unaware that they have it.

The Sleep Study

The first step is to find out if sleep apnoea is present and determine the degree of severity. This can only be done with an overnight sleep study.   In the sleep study the parameters of sleep are measured and the results evaluated by a sleep physician, with a diagnosis made for both the presence and severity of sleep apnoea.
